Historic Garden Week in Virginia
3north residences will be represented once again on this year’s Historic Garden Week tour on Thursday, April 26. The Three Chopt/Westhampton tour in Richmond will feature two properties from 3north Principal Jay Hugo’s portfolio: 30 Old Mill Road and 6615 Three Chopt Road.
For Old Mill Road, 3north designed a gracious porch off the rear of the house to improve the connection to the rear yard and to create a welcoming space for entertaining and family gathering. Broad steps help ease the transition from the porch to the lawn below and make the porch more welcoming and accessible.
With the addition of the porch, the homeowner was concerned about losing light in the inside of the house. To compound matters, the homeowners wanted to convert a two-story gallery space into two separate rooms, further blocking light. Architect Morgan Pierce, now in 3north’s San Francisco office, devised a plan to incorporate translucent glass panels to serve as the ceiling in the room below and the floor in the new room created above. The panels allow light to spill through the existing dormer. The photos from Remodel Magazine in the bottom photo depict the two room.
This upstairs space is part of the tour as well as the master bedroom and bath also designed by 3north.

Nice work by 3north.
